Annan Day Centre has been awarded a 'highly commended' certificate by Age Scotland for their involvement in the Big Knit campaign.

Their fundraising efforts involved picking up their knitting needles to create over 5,000 tiny hats for bottle toppers.

More than £1,500 was raised - all in support of Age Scotland’s services for older people.

Annan Day Centre was one of just 17 groups to be mentioned at Age Scotland’s recent Awards & Conference event.

The certificate shines a light on individuals and organisations who go the extra mile to support older people in their communities, offering vital friendship and assistance day in, day out.

Engagement Officer Lynda McDairmant says this fundraising activity united the community.

"While they were making the hats, it was also having a great benefit to them, getting together around the table and knitting for a good cause.

"It was about so much more than the actual fundraising.

"One of the members said to me when I told them about the award, that it made them feel proud. That was lovely to hear. That sort of feel-good feeling is still continuing after nearly a year, when they were knitting all of these hats!

"And that's the essence of Annan Day Centre! We want people from our local community to feel that sense of purpose, feel that they belong, that they have friendship. It's what we all need, we all need community."
