Urgent funds needed to brighten Annan’s Christmas

The committee might have to scale back for next year if they don’t meet their target.

Donations can be made via the committees appeal posted on its Facebook page.

There's a risk Annan's Christmas Lights Switch-On could be scaled back this year unless urgent funds are raised.

The town committee says the total cost of the new and replacement lights at the East entrance and adding a brand-new sign at the North end of the town is just over £9,000, and they want to get a quarter of that money in as soon as possible.

A target of £2,000 has been set.

Trustee Sean Black says any donation is welcome.

“It’s not just the lights that we pay for, it’s the extra wires and the fittings – not necessarily the things that you might see or think about. We’re quite lucky that we don’t pay for the installation of the high streetlights, as that’s covered by a grant from the council. But everything else that goes with the lights switch-on is entirely the responsibility of the Annan Christmas Lights Committee.”

There’s a risk that celebrations will be less colourful next year if they don’t raise enough funds, he adds.

“If we don’t hit our £2,000 target, it’s as simple as the fact that we can’t repair or renew lights next year. We’ll always still try to provide a switch-on, and that’s of course free for everyone, but it might just be that little bit tight.”
