Football fans praised for conduct after Scotland's World Cup opener
Police report positive behaviour with only a few issues
Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Houston has commended the behaviour of football supporters across Scotland following the national team's opening World Cup match.
In the early hours of this morning (Sunday, 14th June 2026), fan zones across Scotland opened their doors to eager fans with extended licences, aiming to create a vibrant atmosphere for the occasion.
Police Scotland worked collaboratively with organisers to ensure a safe and secure environment was maintained throughout the event.
Houston said, "Officers were deployed across Scotland as part of our proportionate policing plan and I'm delighted to say most reported fans in good spirits, conducting themselves in a responsible manner, with only a couple of isolated incidents requiring our involvement."
However, there were a couple of incidents requiring police intervention.
In Inverness, a 30-year-old man was arrested following a disturbance during which a police officer was assaulted, but did not require medical treatment.
The man is scheduled to appear at Inverness Sheriff Court at a later date.
Additionally, a serious assault occurred around 3.40am on Main Street in Neilston, Glasgow.
A 37-year-old man was injured and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Investigations are ongoing to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Houston concluded, "We will continue to support our partner agencies and local businesses throughout the tournament, at what is an exciting time for Scottish football fans."
