Police Scotland is investigating reports of a possible lynx sighting in woodland near Newton Stewart earlier this week.

According to officers, the animal was reportedly seen around midday on Wednesday, 26 February, but the sighting was not reported to police until Friday, 28 February.

Authorities are now working with wildlife experts to assess the situation.

A Police Scotland spokesperson advised the public not to approach the animal if spotted and to report any further sightings by calling 101, quoting incident 0972 of 28 February.

The force said: "We are aware of a possible sighting of a lynx in woodland near Newton Stewart around 12pm on Wednesday, 26 February, 2025.

“The sighting was reported to police on Friday, 28 February, and officers are working with partners to establish the full circumstances."

NatureScot has also been made aware of the situation. In a statement it said: "“A member of the public has reported a possible lynx sighting in woodland near Newton Stewart on Wednesday 26 February.

"Police Scotland is investigating the possible sighting and NatureScot has put out trail cameras in the area. Nearby landowners have been informed.”

The possible sighting comes just weeks after several of the wild cats were illegally released in the Cairngorms.

In early January, lynx were spotted twice in the Cairngorms National Park before being captured near Kingussie, south of Aviemore, just days later.

While one male sadly died after capture, three females survived and are now awaiting a new home after completing a 30-day quarantine at Edinburgh Zoo.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) condemned the illegal release as "highly irresponsible."
