New beef facility in Dumfries & Galloway promises jobs and sustainability
The £24 million development aims to reduce carbon footprint and boost local economy
Officials say a new beef processing facility breaking ground in Dumfries & Galloway is set to boost employment, enhance sustainability and add value to Scotland's rural economy.
Backed by a £4.7 million investment from the South of Scotland Enterprise (SOSE), the development by Pickstock Telford in Ecclefechan will cost over £24 million and is one of SOSE's largest investments ever.
The project aims to integrate food production with innovation and renewable energy, creating around 250 jobs during construction and up to 90 permanent roles when operational. Additionally, 40 apprenticeships are anticipated, fostering local skill development.
The facility will focus on high animal welfare and carbon reduction by implementing anaerobic digestion, combined heat and power, and solar energy systems.
The construction started with a ceremony attended by Pickstock Telford, SOSE, and Dumfries & Galloway Council, marking a significant milestone for the region's economy.
Cabinet Secretary for Economy Stephen Flynn highlighted the importance of combining modern food production with eco-friendly practices to support rural growth. SOSE Chair Russel Griggs expressed pride in enabling transformational investments that support local economies.
With its focus on sustainable growth and local employment, Ecclefechan is set to play a pivotal role in Scotland's agriculture sector.
Greg Pickstock of Pickstock Telford underscored the project's ambition to align high-quality food production with carbon reduction efforts, aiming for a sustainable supply chain and career opportunities within the region.
