Lochmaben Golf Club hits ‘once in a lifetime’ milestone
Celebrations for the centenary anniversary are being held this weekend.
Last updated 26th Mar 2026
Lochmaben Golf Club is set to commemorate its 100th anniversary tomorrow, marking a century of sporting achievements and community connection in the town.
Founded in 1926, the club has grown into a vital part of Lochmaben life, serving not only as a venue for golf but as a hub for social interaction and community development.
The centenary celebrations begin on Saturday (28th March) with an opening day event that will bring together members, visitors, and the local community.
Growth through the years
Club Captain, Kenny Bell, says in its early days, Lochmaben Golf Club featured a simple 9-hole course.
“There were no trees on the course, there were no bunkers - we even had sheep on the course at that time. We had protective fencing around the greens for four months of the year. We had one greenkeeper, with an old broken-down tractor – we didn’t have a clubhouse.”
But to Bell, who joined as a member at the age of 12, that was never a problem:
“At that age, I enjoyed what we had – it was nine holes and sheep we had to dodge. I have never seen us having what we have now, and when I look into the future, I realise we are improving every day.”
Today, it has evolved into a modern and inclusive space, hosting not just golf but also social events and community initiatives, with plans for further development, including a new balcony overlooking the course.
Highlights
In an interview with Greatest Hits Radio, our reporter Ruth Ridley asked Captain Bell about the club's achievments.
He says there have been several proud moments for all members over the years, who have played some exceptionally good games, coming home as champions and raising the profile of the club.
“We’ve always had a good batch of golfers here. We’ve won the Dumfriesshire league title several years - I think we’ve won it the last three years. We’ve won the junior league the last couple of years.”
Committing to progress
This year marks a significant milestone as the club appoints its first female Vice Captain, Lynda Nairn, showcasing its progression and inclusivity.
The club is modernising its structure by transitioning to charitable status, ensuring its long-term viability and community relevance.
General Manager Donna Wilson said, "Reaching 100 years is an incredible milestone for Lochmaben Golf Club. This year is about celebrating our history, bringing the community together, and looking ahead to an exciting future."
Club Captain Kenny Bell added, "There's a real sense of pride around the club this year. We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone - whether you play golf or not - to be part of our centenary celebrations."
Further enhancements include the addition of a new balcony overlooking the course, enhancing clubhouse facilities and creating inviting environments for everyone.
A year of celebration
With a full calendar of events planned for 2026, Lochmaben Golf Club is determined to make its centenary year memorable.
The club encourages everyone in the area - golfer or not - to come along, experience the club, and join in celebrating this unique milestone.
