The Energy Transition Zone near Annan has reached a new milestone – planning permission has been granted.

The South of Scotland Enterprise can now start pressing on with construction plans for the site which is opposite to Chapelcross.

The agency bought the 6.5-hectare land in November 2023, near the M74 corridor, and lodged a planning application in June the following year.

Last summer, a master plan was unveiled, showcasing the vision for the site.

Work is to begin instantly now that SOSE has permission. Greatest Hits Radio was told in an interview that “as many local people as possible will be employed”.

SOSE’s chief executive Jane Morrison-Ross says this is “another significant step forward for the Energy Transition Zone project”.

“It gives us the potential to create what will be a national resource, driving forward energy transition, new technologies, new innovation and solutions that can help Scotland and further afield.

“We have had real interest globally incoming to the South of Scotland. There is a real understanding that the South of Scotland is the place to invest in and do business in. We’re now up to around 40 inward investment inquiries and opportunities.

“The Energy Transition Zone will provide a base for inward investors, for companies that want to come to the South of Scotland to invest in the South and to grow. But it also creates opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs who want to expand or set up.”
