Multiple arrests for drink and drug driving in Dumfries and Galloway
A focused campaign highlights road safety concerns
Road Policing officers in Dumfries and Galloway arrested 18 drivers during a focused summer campaign against drink and drug driving.
The initiative ran from 29th June to 12th July 2026, and aimed to increase road checks and vehicle stops to address driving under the influence concerns.
Enquiries into the cases are ongoing, highlighting the seriousness of the offences.
In response to the campaign, Sergeant David Kerr discussed the dangers of impaired driving.
"We continue to target those who put themselves and others at risk by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs," Sergeant Kerr said.
"There simply is no excuse for drink or drug driving and unfortunately within Dumfries and Galloway we continue to see people doing this.
"It has become apparent that those who are prescribed cannabis for ailments drive vehicles under the belief they are fit to drive. Individuals should seek guidance from medical professionals prior to consuming medication and driving, as you should with any other medication. We will continue to arrest those who exceed the legal limits.
"Remember you can still be over the drink drive limit the morning after consuming alcohol and drugs may remain in your system for longer and be detected by our roadside drug wipe tests.
"I would encourage anyone with information about a driver who drives under the influence contact police and help make our roads safer this summer."
Beyond the campaign's activities, police officers routinely carry out enforcement measures on Scotland's roads year-round. The collaboration with related organisations supports ongoing road safety improvements.
Drink and drug driving are known to contribute to serious injuries and fatalities, underscoring the need for vigilance and prevention.
