Dalbeattie Scouts celebrate 100th anniversary
They’re hosting an event next month so the community can join in on the celebrations.
Dalbeattie Scouts are celebrating an important milestone – their 100th anniversary!
They’re planning on marking this historical occasion by hosting an event for the community next month at Colliston Park.
Anyone with any stories, memorabilia, or pictures is being asked to share them, where they will be put on display at the celebratory event on September 6th.
1st Dalbeattie Team Leader, Kevin Lesser, welcomes everyone to come along to celebrate with them:
“Over the years, so many local families have had kids in the Scouts, helped out as volunteers, or supported us in some other way. That’s why it feels right to celebrate this milestone with the community.
“It’s a chance to look back, share memories, reconnect with friends and make some new ones, too.”
Looking for stories
“We’ll save everything as part of our centenary project, including the stories and photos, and even voice recordings if people want to share memories that way.
“What we’re going to do is create display and photo boards, which we’ll show at local events and hopefully, our own Scout hut will have some of these photos as well.”
Lesser specifies what kind of thing they’re looking for:
“Whether it’s funny memories from the camps, or moments that have inspired you, or just a quick story from your time with the Scouts. Any photos, old badges or leadership memories they’re all welcome.
“We’re especially keen to hear about your time in Scouts and what’s made a difference in the community.”
Volunteer appeal
Although they are enjoying this significant achievement, they’ve still got the next century to prepare for, which is why team leaders are looking to take on more volunteers.
Lesser says, “There are loads you can do: like supporting the weekly meetings with our Beavers or Scouts, helping with games, crafts and activities. We’re also on the lookout for leaders for our youngest group, the Squirrels, and leaders to restart the Cubs section.”
Squirrels is just like Scouts, but for kids aged 4 to 6, and it's the step before going to Beavers.
“Without our volunteers, the group just wouldn’t be able to run. The great thing is that volunteers don’t just help the Scouts. It’s a brilliant way to connect with others, build friendships, and feel part of something bigger in the community.”
Recognising milestone
The team leader reflects on some of the group's fondest memories from over the years:
“Some of our biggest highlights have been the amazing camp trips to places like Blair Atholl and even the USA.
“It’s been brilliant to see our members and team leaders achieving things like the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, which just goes to show how much Dalbeattie Scouts helps young people grow and succeed.”
