MP David Mundell praises building society's commitment
Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell has praised The Cumberland Building Society for its pledge to keep its branches open across the local area.
This commitment comes after Mundell’s meeting with Stuart Miller, the Chief Executive of The Cumberland Building Society.
The Cumberland operates branches in Dumfries town centre, Lockerbie, Langholm, Annan, and Gretna.
Many financial institutions are reducing their high street presence, but The Cumberland plans to retain face-to-face banking services.
MP Praises Local Service
David Mundell MP expressed his satisfaction, saying, “I was very pleased to meet Stuart Miller and particularly welcomed his clear commitment to maintaining The Cumberland’s branch network locally.”
Mundell highlighted the importance of local access to financial services, especially for older and vulnerable customers.
“For many people, having somewhere locally where they can speak to somebody face-to-face about their finances remains very important," Mundell said.
"This is particularly true for older and more vulnerable customers, but also for others who value having access to services in their own community."
Future Plans and Community Impact
Mr Miller also shared plans to offer charity bank accounts, which Mundell believes will benefit local charitable organisations.
Mundell acknowledged The Cumberland's contribution to local high streets, stating, "High streets and town centres are under considerable pressure, and every organisation which remains committed to serving our communities locally makes a real difference."
He emphasised that organisations like building societies play a critical role in sustaining financial services in rural areas as the banking sector evolves.
