Body recovered near Portpatrick prompts unexplained death inquiry
Death treated as unexplained as inquiries continue
A man has been found dead after emergency services responded to reports of a person in the water near Portpatrick.
The discovery was made following a multi-agency search operation that was initiated around 07:15 on Sunday morning.
Responders included police, coastguard rescue teams from Portpatrick, Stranraer, Ballintrae, and Drummore, as well as a coastguard helicopter.
Authorities have stated that the man's death is currently being treated as unexplained, and investigations are ongoing.
Police have confirmed that a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
HM Coastguard played a crucial role in the search effort, deploying resources from multiple locations to assist in the operation.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 7.15am on Sunday, 20 September, 2026, we were called to a report of a person in the water at Portpatrick.
"Emergency services attended and the body of a man was recovered.
"The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.
"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
