Urgent repairs scheduled for The Cobb in Lyme Regis

Dorset Council plans vital works in May to address structural issues

Dorset Council is set to conduct urgent repair works at The Cobb in Lyme Regis on the 18th and 19th of May. These repairs aim to address a significant structural void and ensure the continued safety and stability of this historic Dorset landmark.

The need for repairs was identified last year, but an earlier attempt in March was hindered by shingle build-up, which blocked access to the affected area.

The upcoming low spring tides offer an ideal window for the necessary work.

The repairs will take place from within a secure site compound, with construction traffic accessing the site via the Cobb roadway.

All materials and equipment will remain within the fenced area during the operation.

Access Restrictions During Repairs

During the repairs, access to certain areas of The Cobb will be restricted for safety reasons.

There will be no access to the higher wall, lower walkway, or beach adjacent to the site compound.

However, access to Cobb buildings and fishing activities will remain unaffected.

These measures are critical to ensure public safety in the challenging coastal environment.

The schedule may change at short notice due to weather and sea conditions.

Dorset Council will monitor conditions closely to ensure the work proceeds safely.

Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, emphasised the importance of timing and the need for cooperation.

“The Cobb is hugely important to Lyme Regis and to Dorset, and these repairs are about protecting it for the future. This work has to be done in very specific tidal and weather conditions, which is why timing is so critical. We know any restrictions can be inconvenient, but they’re essential to keep people safe while we carry out this urgent repair.”

He expressed gratitude for the patience of residents, visitors, and local businesses during the repairs.
