Urban exploring, or 'urbexing,' is gaining traction in Dorset as a thrilling but hazardous trend among young individuals.

The activity involves visiting abandoned or empty sites and filming these explorations for social media.

However, the practice can involve trespassing, potentially classifying participants as engaging in burglary, invasion of privacy, or intimidation.

These derelict locations pose hidden dangers, with the risk of serious or life-changing injuries.

The increased reports of incidents in recent months prompted Dorset Police to issue a new video addressed to parents, carers, and guardians.

Police warn against urban exploring

Police Constable Dominic Frost from Bournemouth police emphasised the dangers associated with urban exploring.

"We would urge people not to put themselves in danger by engaging in this type of activity," Police Constable Frost said.

"Sadly, while such activities may be seen as amusing or thrill-seeking they can end in tragedy and I would urge those involved to stop before somebody is seriously injured or killed."

Frost highlighted the illegal nature of trespassing on private property, cautioning about potential life-changing consequences.

The police video calls upon parents and guardians to ensure awareness of their children's whereabouts, urging them to discuss the risks of urbexing.

"So please, take a few minutes today to talk to your children about the dangers of urban exploring," Frost said.

The video, aimed at increasing awareness and preventing incidents, can be viewed here .

The police encourage the public to report suspicious activities or trespassers at abandoned sites immediately to Dorset Police.

Incident-related intelligence or images can be submitted through the 'Report your intelligence' portal online.
