Teenager who drowned saving relatives from sea posthumously honoured for bravery
Callum Baker-Osborne rescued family members from a strong tidal current in Poole
An 18-year-old who drowned after saving his relatives from a strong tidal current in Poole has been posthumously awarded the King's Commendation for Bravery.
Callum Baker-Osborne was on holiday with his family in Poole, Dorset, on 26th July 2021 when several family members, including his mother, sister, nieces, and nephews, were caught in deep water. He jumped into the sea to rescue them but tragically drowned.
His body was found four days later at Lake Pier in Poole Harbour, about a mile from where he entered the water.
Speaking about the award, Mr Baker-Osborne’s sister, Samantha Grady, described him as "the life and soul of the party" and a hero.
"He truly was the life and soul of the party, like the most incredible person. He just went out of his way to try and help anyone, at any point," she said.
Reflecting on her brother’s bravery and recognition, she commented: "It was like a release, like finally he's being recognised for what we've said all along. He truly is a hero."
Two other men have also been recognised with the King's Commendation for Bravery.
Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole, 20, died in London on 24th April 2021 after jumping into the River Thames near London Bridge to save a woman. He had been on his way home from work when he entered the water with Joaquin Garcia, aged 26, who he did not know.
Mr Garcia said it was a great honour to receive the award and that it feels like a reminder of the good he was able to do by helping keep the woman afloat until further help arrived.
Mr Olubunmi-Adewole’s death was ruled accidental, but his courage and selflessness were praised.
Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary David Lammy said: "Folajimi, Joaquin, and Callum risked their lives for strangers without hesitation. Their actions showcase the best of us. Their families and their country are deeply proud of them."
The posthumous awards for Mr Baker-Osborne and Mr Olubunmi-Adewole will be presented to their next of kin.
