Survey open for road restriction proposal near Bournemouth schools
Consultation seeks views on traffic control measures
Poor drivers and congestion’ is prompting consultation on a proposal to have additional restrictions on roads surrounding two schools in order to improve safety.
The local authority has launched a survey on proposed additional traffic restrictions on Ibbett Road, Bennion Road, and Hadow Road, outside Kingsleigh Primary School and The Bourne Academy. The plans are design to build on the existing Safer School Street scheme that is in place on Hadow Road.
The safer school street on Hadow Road prohibits vehicles from entering between 8am and 8.45am and 2.45pm and 3.45pm, Monday to Friday. This was made permanent on April 26.
A School Street is a road outside a school with a temporary restriction on motorised traffic and parking. Restrictions are limited to short periods at peak school drop-off and pick-up times only. The restriction applies to school traffic and through traffic, but there can be exemptions for residents of the street, blue badge holders and for other essential purposes.
A decision document making the School Street permanent shows that both schools support additional measures to “deal with congestion and poor driver behaviour of those who continue to travel to park as close to the schools as possible.”
The additional restrictions proposed for the street include a southbound one-way system along Bennion Road and Ibbett Road, a 20mph speed limit covering Hadow Road, Bennion Road, Ibbett Road and Pavan Gardens, introducing timed no waiting and no loading on the north side of Hadow Road.
The council is also looking at creating extra timed disabled parking bays on Hadow Road, Ibbett Road and Pavan Gardens, all on the north side. Further parking controls are planned in the form of double yellow lines at key junctions, including Ibbett Road with Kingswell Road and the junction linking Kingswell Road, Kinson Road and Caroline Road.
Residents, parents, carers and school staff are being invited to give their initial views on the proposals.
The survey will determine if a trial of the proposed restrictions will go ahead. Residents will also have an opportunity to share their opinions on the trial if one is undertaken.
The survey can be found on BCP Council’s consultation page and runs util 11:59pm on July 3.
