Heavy rain and strong winds brought by Storm Ingrid are expected to cause widespread disruption across the South West of England and southern Wales.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for these regions, which is in place until 9am on Saturday (24 January).

Forecasters predict spells of heavy rain accompanied by gusts of 45-50 mph inland and up to 60 mph near the coast. Winds are expected to peak on Friday evening before easing overnight into Saturday morning.

Flood warnings are already live in areas including Devon, Cornwall, West Sussex, Somerset, Hampshire, Wiltshire, and Dorset, as strong winds and heavy rainfall heighten the possibility of flooding.

The Met Office has advised coastal areas to brace for large waves and strong onshore winds, highlighting the potential dangers for communities near the coast. Areas inland could see rainfall totals of 30-60mm, with higher ground exposed to southeasterly winds potentially experiencing accumulations of between 80-120mm.

Storm Ingrid follows a period of unsettled weather, with many areas already saturated after recent rain. Combined with the impacts of snow thaw in some upland areas, conditions are likely to worsen for infrastructure and travel in affected counties.

Weather warnings have prompted advice from local authorities and emergency services for people to monitor updates carefully. Drivers are being urged to plan routes carefully, avoid flooded roads, and check for updates from highways agencies and rail operators.

Further updates are expected as Storm Ingrid progresses, bringing an unpredictable mix of heavy rain and storm conditions to the South West and southern Wales in the hours ahead.
