Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service (DWFRS) has issued a warning about scam emails circulating in parts of the UK.

These emails incorrectly claim a £500 penalty for homes without a working smoke alarm.

DWFRS emphasises that official home fire safety visits are always free, and any smoke alarms installed during these visits are provided at no charge.

Area Manager Marc House, DWFRS Head of Prevention, said: “We are aware of people around the country receiving these emails, and we have had one reported directly to us as well. Please be assured, we never charge for any aspect of a home fire safety visit, including the installation of smoke alarms. Any communication suggesting otherwise is a scam."

DWFRS staff will be in uniform and carry identification when visiting properties to ensure authenticity for community members.

DWFRS advises residents to remain cautious regarding unsolicited emails or messages, avoiding actions like clicking unfamiliar links or sharing personal information in suspicious communications.

To aid protection efforts, conversations with friends, family, and neighbours, especially those who are elderly or vulnerable, are encouraged to raise awareness about these scams.

Reports of suspected scam emails can be directed to the National Cyber Security Centre at [email protected].
