Progress recognised in support for children with SEND in BCP

The government has acknowledged a significant advancement in services for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole.
Secretary of State for Education Bridget Phillipson has announced in a letter that the government will step down the statutory direction for the BCP Local Area Partnership, transitioning it to an Improvement Notice.
This move is regarded as an indication of growing confidence in the work being done across education, health, and care sectors.
Bridget Phillipson said: “This significant step reflects the hard work undertaken by the local area partnership to improve SEND services.”
Improvements in the system have been noted, including stronger collaboration among partners, enhanced health support, increased involvement with young people and families, and improved outcomes.
The creation of 276 more SEND-suitable places in mainstream schools over the past two years shows that more children with SEND are being effectively supported, with attainment now above the national average.
For further progress, government approval of the Local SEND Reform Plan designed by the BCP Local Area Partnership is necessary.
This plan, if approved this autumn, could unlock extra government support to address SEND funding pressures.
Councillor Richard Burton said: “We have worked closely with families, carers, and - most importantly - children and young people to shape a strong and ambitious SEND Reform Plan. Their voices have directly shaped our priorities, and I am confident the plan reflects what matters most to them.”
