A proposal to turn part of a waterside car park on Portland into a storage area for boats and trailers has been refused .

The planning application, for Crown Wharf in Castletown from Clark’s boatyard sought permission to use part of the existing car park for boat and trailer storage, together with associated vehicle parking.

The application said the change had already taken place  – from July 2025.

More than 30 people and the Town Council had objected to the loss of parking in an area where spaces were said to be scarce, while 18 supported the proposal.

Dorset Council planning officers rejected the plans pointing to planning policy which seeks to maintain the level of car parking in the area – unless there is no longer a  proven need, or alternative sites offered.
