Specialist officers from Dorset Police have created a new guide designed to assist parents and guardians in managing their children's use of social media safely.
As young people become increasingly entrenched in the digital world, the force’s Digital Capabilities Unit has focused on compiling reliable resources for parents, opening dialogues about social media usage, and outlining practical steps to ensure online safety.
The guide covers various social media platforms and gaming sites that children may frequent, and provides directions for parents seeking further help and resources.
Detective Inspector Andy Brix, a representative from the Digital Capabilities Unit, explained the initiative: “This guide has been carefully compiled by my team to offer parents and guardians some really practical advice on how to keep children safe online such as activating parental controls for some online platforms.”
Brix highlighted the growing influence of social media in the lives of young people, impacting their learning and socialisation, and acknowledged the need for adults to understand potential online risks and opportunities.
He emphasised the importance of communication between families: “We sincerely hope this guide will help parents have a greater understanding of these platforms and will encourage open conversations with young people around the responsible use of social media and gaming platforms."
