A driver was arrested in North Dorset after reportedly fleeing from officers during a proactive road safety operation on the evening of 23rd September 2026.

The operation involved officers from the Road Safety Team, the local neighbourhood policing team, Special Constabulary, and the Safety Camera Team, addressing road safety concerns in the area.

Community Speed Watch volunteers had earlier identified 38 speeding motorists in Bourton, including one driving at 62mph in a 30mph zone.

During the evening, police attempted to stop a vehicle in Blandford. The driver, a 38-year-old man from Wareham, was located by a police dog after reportedly abandoning the vehicle in the Sandford area. He was arrested on suspicion of driving offences and released under investigation as inquiries continue.

A separate arrest was made in Gillingham for suspected drink driving. Two vehicles were seized for racing under Section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002, and another vehicle was confiscated for lack of insurance and a valid licence.

Offences also included driving without due care, not having a valid MOT, and exceeding speed limits.

Police Sergeant Luke Sands highlighted the importance of road safety, urging the community to report concerns as these help direct police efforts to address local issues.

He said: “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility and we all need to play our part to keep everyone safe.

“We listened to the concerns of the local community and carried out this operation in direct response to issues raised to us.

“There is no excuse for driving otherwise than in accordance with the law – you could cause harm to yourself or another road user.

“We would continue to encourage the public to report road safety concerns to us, it really helps us to understand what is happening in your area and how we can target any problems."
