A new destination management plan has been launched to shape the future of tourism in Dorset over the next decade.

Dubbed the Dorset Destination Management Plan, it sets out a shared vision to develop the county into a welcoming, vibrant, and sustainable year-round destination.

The plan aims to support local jobs and businesses while enriching the visitor experience, and was unveiled at Dorset Museum & Art Gallery on 9th September.

The plan is a collaborative effort between Dorset and BCP Councils, supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, and has been produced with the Dorset Local Visitor Economy Partnership (LVEP) Advisory Board. Feedback from tourism stakeholders through workshops and surveys has guided its formation.

Lyndsey Turner Swift, Deputy Director of VisitEngland, commended the plan: “Dorset’s collaborative approach demonstrates the strength of the LVEP model and creates a strong foundation for sustainable tourism growth over the coming decade."

Key priorities of the plan include:

  • Growing the year-round visitor economy
  • Enhancing Dorset's destination offer
  • Strengthening skills and workforce development
  • Improving sustainability and accessibility
  • Increasing the county’s competitiveness

The strategic direction provided by the Destination Management Plan aims to unlock Dorset's full potential as a tourist hub while extending the benefits of tourism beyond the usual peak seasons.

The plan will be delivered through a programme developed with partners across both public and private sectors to bolster local communities through sustained tourism efforts.
