New NHS figures show nearly 26,000 people in the South West tried to quit smoking in the past year.

But - we're told there's still work to do with more than half a million adults in the region still lighting up.

Experts are calling on people to use local support services..

In Dorset - nearly 60 percent of people to tried stopping, stayed smoke-free after 4 weeks.

Dr Justin Varney-Bennet, NHS Public Health Director for the South West, said: "The burden of cigarettes is long and heavy, and causes thousands of deaths across the South West every year. We've got more ways to help people to quit than ever before - we've got patches, vapes and a whole range of services.

"6,500 people in the last year have lost their lives because of smoking in this region - they didn't need to die, if we'd been able to get to them to give up the addiction to cigarettes."
