More than £68 million will be invested in council housing across Bournemouth and Poole as part of plans to ensure homes remain “safe, warm and good quality”.

BCP Council’s Housing Revenue Account (HRA) budget for 2026/27 sets out £43 million for major works across its housing stock, alongside a further £25 million for planned maintenance.

The programme includes upgraded kitchens and bathrooms, improved roofs and windows, enhanced building safety measures and more reliable central systems aimed at improving comfort and security for residents.

The budget also confirms that council housing rents will increase by 4.8%, in line with government policy and the rise in the Consumer Price Index over the past year.

In Bournemouth, the average weekly rent will rise by £5.25 to £114.67, while tenants in Poole will see an average increase of £5.21, taking weekly rents to £113.84.

Introducing the report to cabinet, Councillor Kieron Wilson said the council remained focused on continuous improvement, despite recently receiving the highest grade in the country for its council housing from the housing regulator,

Councillor Sandra Moore highlighted the wider impact of housing investment, saying there was a clear link between decent homes and better outcomes for residents, including reduced risks of respiratory illness and accidents such as trips and falls.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Wilson said the Housing Revenue Account was built on a “responsible long-term plan” that allows the council to invest with confidence.

He added: “The proposed rent increase of 4.8% is set nationally and ensures our rents remain among the most affordable in the area.

“This investment will enable £25 million of major works across our housing stock, alongside a further £17 million for new homes to meet housing needs while continuing to support our existing residents and communities.”.

Cabinet members voted unanimously to approve the Housing Revenue Account budget.
