New supported living housing in Weymouth opens for young adults
The facility on Littlemoor Road helps them take steps towards independence
A new Supported Living scheme has been officially launched on Littlemoor Road, Weymouth, providing young adults aged 18 to 25 with support needs an opportunity to transition towards independent living.
The housing project, a collaboration between Dorset Council, Advance Housing, and Care Dorset, is designed for young adults with mild to moderate support needs to develop life skills in a supportive environment.
Cllr Steve Robinson, responsible for Adult Social Care, expressed satisfaction over the new initiative, following the success of its predecessor on Dorchester Road in Weymouth.
"It’s encouraging to see Care Dorset staff actively supporting these individuals in skill-building and community integration," Robinson said.
Facilities and Support Services
The renovated three-bedroom property on Littlemoor Road includes shared kitchen and living areas, with a bathroom for each bedroom.
It functions as a Transitional property through a licence agreement with Advance Housing, allowing occupants to eventually move to more permanent homes.
Care Dorset ensures 24/7 onsite support, offering guidance in financial management, domestic activities, and community participation.
Caroline Tapster, Chair of Care Dorset, expressed enthusiasm for the project. "We’re eager to apply the lessons from our first home to this new venture," Tapster said.
Collaborative Effort
According to Graeme Jackson, Head of Investment and Development at Advance, the scheme promises a nurturing environment that promotes independence.
Jackson emphasised the collaboration with Dorset Council and Care Dorset, aiming to provide young people a supportive home to acquire essential life skills for their future.
Dorset Council has played a critical role in identifying a suitable property and facilitating a smooth transition for residents.
Move-ins for the Littlemoor Road property will continue over the summer.
