Hundreds evacuated after gas leak at Ferndown Industrial Estate

A 25m exclusion zones has been put in place

Hundreds of people have been evacuated after a gas leak at an industrial estate in Dorset.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said it received a call at around 12.14pm this afternoon (May 28) that a vehicle had struck a small gas main on Ferndown Industrial Estate.

A 25m exclusion zones has now been put in place by the fire service and 200 people have been evacuated whilst the area is made safe.

Fire service crews along with Dorset Police and the Gas board remain at the scene.

In a statement Dorset Police said it was assisting the fire service with road closures.

The Dorset Cat Centre has been forced to close with "immediate effect" due to the incident.

In a post on social media the animal charity said: "We regret to inform you that due to an incident on Ferndown Industrial Estate, we have had to close the centre with immediate effect.

"Please be assured that all of our cats are safe and continue to be cared for by our team.

"We will remain closed until further notice and will provide an update as soon as more information becomes available."
