Firefighters tackle thatch fire in Sturminster Newton

Emergency services respond to blaze in Dorset village

Firefighters have been working to extinguish a thatched roof fire in Kingston, Sturminster Newton.

The fire broke out on Back Lane, a residential area in the Dorset village, at 19:07 on 19th April 2026.

Pumping appliances from various stations including Sturminster Newton, Blandford, Sherborne, Shaftesbury, Bere Regis, Poole, Tisbury, Ferndown, and Wincanton were deployed to the scene.

An aerial ladder platform was dispatched from Yeovil, and water carriers from Bridport, Yeovil, and Poole were also present, alongside support vehicles from Gillingham and Ferndown.

Firefighters are using water and compressed air foam to control the blaze.

Efforts have been made to salvage personal possessions from within the building.

The operation is being conducted by Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Authority personnel.
