A new car park for a Dorset village school should put an end to indiscriminate parking by parents.

Dorset councillors have agreed a 30-place car park for Hazelbury Bryan primary school – with its own entrance, using a green space between the school buildings and the playing field.

Part of a hedge and some small trees will have to be removed to create the access with new planting along the edge of the parking area to make up for the loss.

Sports England said it was happy with the changes because it would leave an acceptable amount of playing field with a safe access maintained.

Cllr Carole Jones, who said she had often visited the school, witnessing drivers blocking junctions and driveways, told fellow councillors on the northern area planning committee that the car park was desperately needed with the school only have six parking spaces at the moment:

“People just park on corners, the road is so narrow…. Let’s just do it” she said.

The proposals had received several letters of support from parents and residents, some claiming that the existing situation was dangerous at peak pick-up and drop-off times.

Highway officers said the scheme should allow a bus to pull into the car park and reverse out, or carry out the opposite manoeuvre, a situation which was not ideal, but better than the existing situation, which inevitably blocked the road.
