Dorset has launched a major new strategy aimed at restoring and protecting its natural environment over the next decade.

The Dorset Local Nature Recovery Strategy, developed by Dorset Council in partnership with BCP Council and Natural England, maps out key opportunity areas and sets clear actions to reverse declines in wildlife and habitats.

It reflects input from local farmers, communities and environmental experts, and will guide planning, land management, climate resilience, and public health initiatives.

Cllr Nick Ireland, Leader of Dorset Council, described the strategy as “a turning point” for the county’s natural environment.

He said: “Dorset’s natural environment is one of our greatest assets, but over time it has been weakened. This strategy marks an end to the decline and a focus on recovery.

“Nature matters to everyone in Dorset and this strategy turns ambition into action. Working with our partners and the local community we can create cleaner rivers, thriving woodlands and protect our habitats and species.”

The strategy outlines 13 priorities, including restoring grasslands, woodlands, hedgerows, and heathlands, as well as improving rivers, lakes, and wetlands.

It also focuses on protecting coastal areas, enhancing urban green spaces and creating space for natural habitats to recover.

A key element is supporting farmers to adopt more sustainable practices, including reinstating natural processes such as floodplain reconnection and peatland restoration.

Nature-based solutions are also central to addressing climate change and connecting people with nature.

The plan aligns with the national goal of ensuring 30% of land, rivers, and seas are protected or actively managed for nature by 2030.

BCP Council’s Cllr Andy Hadley welcomed the strategy, saying: “We know how important nature recovery, and reversing decline, is in both rural and urban areas.

“This fresh, joined-up approach is a clear statement of intent across BCP and the wider Dorset area. By working together, we will be able to protect, restore, and improve our vast natural spaces.”
