Concerns over sexual images being shared by Dorset children
A Council committee's been hearing about the issues facing schools
Sexual images are being widely shared among schoolchildren in Dorset – a people and health committee has heard.
Cllr Jane Somper, who represents the Beacon ward, claims most parents will be completely unaware of what is happening, including images of children themselves being shared.
She told the Dorset Council committee that much of the problem occurred outside of schools with many head teachers now taking phones from pupils at the start of the day.
Cllr Somper said some youngsters were using the dark web for material which she described as “damaging and concerning”.
She said more needed to be done to educate both parents and children about the dangers of their online activities.
The meeting heard that a system already existed where children who had suffered images of themselves being shared could get them removed by online providers.
Said Cllr Somper: “There will be many, many, many parents who have absolutely no idea that these images are being shared and these activities are going on – we need to raise awareness with parents as well as the young people… I am sure many young people know about it but I am not sure parents do. What influence can we have to raise awareness?” she said.
Cllr Somper said that although she had no direct experience a friend’s family had: “I was shocked, and it’s prevalent… there will be many parents who just don’t know these activities are happening… it’s terribly damaging, long-term, for young people.”
An officer told the committee that thought was being given by the council about how best to spread information about the risk of online activities and access, including using GP surgeries and schools.
Committee chairman Cllr Toni Coombs suggested contacting the Dorset’s Police and Crime Commissioner who may have funding available to help with a campaign.
