Booking system introduced for Dorset's recycling centres

Dorset Council aims to reduce queues and ensure fair costs with new booking system

Starting from 23rd March 2026, Dorset Council will implement a booking system for recycling centres located in Dorchester, Wimborne, Shaftesbury, and Sherborne.

The initiative aims to streamline visits, cut down on waiting times, and maintain fairness for Dorset’s taxpayers.

Currently, Dorset residents are required to pay when using recycling centres operated by neighboring councils, whereas non-Dorset residents use Dorset sites free of charge.

This situation has been deemed unsustainable, as it burdens Dorset households with additional costs.

To address this, non-Dorset visitors will be charged a small fee per visit.

The booking system also aims to curb trade waste abuse, as these centres are designated for household waste only.

Businesses are directed to use licensed facilities.

By requiring bookings, Dorset Council hopes to identify and prevent business use, thereby reducing costs for local taxpayers.

The new system allows for bookings to be made up to two weeks in advance, with each site offering 430 bookable slots daily.

Visitors will have a 30-minute arrival window, and multiple bookings on the same day are allowed.

Booking online takes just a few minutes, and users can also call Dorset Council for assistance.

Non-Dorset visitors will incur a fee, but Dorset residents are exempt, except for DIY waste disposal.

Council's Perspective on the New System

Cllr Jon Andrews, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Place Services, stated:

“We’ve listened to residents and designed a system that’s simple and fair. It improves the experience for Dorset households, ensures taxpayers aren’t covering waste disposal costs for neighbouring areas, and helps prevent business use of household sites. By reducing congestion and improving recycling efficiency, the system also supports a cleaner, greener Dorset.”

Dorset Council is praised as the top-performing unitary authority for recycling in England, and the new system is expected to maintain its position.

Booking systems have a proven track record in managing demand effectively and boosting recycling rates without leading to increased fly-tipping.

The council plans to review the system regularly to ensure continued improvement and value for Dorset taxpayers.

Bookings begin on 16th March.
