Workington's Cumberland Sports Village sets stage for development with initial works
Story Contracting chosen for enabling works as community looks forward to new sports facilities
Workington's Cumberland Sports Village development takes a significant step forward as Story Contracting Ltd has been appointed to carry out the enabling works.
The works, set to commence later this month, are expected to take around three months to complete.
These initial activities will prepare the site for the main development, with efforts including the installation of security measures, temporary fencing, and the creation of a construction compound and laydown area.
Additionally, asbestos removal, utility diversions and disconnections, as well as the removal of existing infrastructure and equipment, are scheduled.
Existing seating and dugouts, along with pitch-side posts, turnstiles, floodlighting columns, and associated infrastructure, will be safely removed during this phase.
Cumberland Sports Village is slated for development at the existing Borough Park Stadium, with Workington AFC and Workington Town RLFC sharing the new stadium facilities.
Community sports facilities will also be developed at the neighbouring Lonsdale Park site.
A planning application has been submitted to accommodate up to 5,000 spectators at the stadium.
Procurement is underway to appoint a main contractor for the construction phase in January 2027.
The Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, emphasised the project's importance, stating that it represents one of the most significant investments in the area’s sports and community infrastructure.
Andy Clode, Managing Director of Story Contracting’s Construction Division, expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Cumberland Council, stating, "We are absolutely delighted to be working with Cumberland Council on a project that is so important to Workington and the wider area."
