The Church of St John's in Workington is among 74 heritage sites across England set to benefit from a substantial government funding initiative for repairs and restoration.

The funding comes from the Places of Worship Renewal Fund, which forms part of the larger £1.5 billion Arts Everywhere Fund dedicated to preserving significant cultural sites.

St John's will share over £18 million along with other historically significant places of worship in the UK.

The restoration at St John's will focus on essential repairs aimed at preventing further structural deterioration and preserving its architectural heritage.

The initiative was announced by Heritage Minister Baroness Twycross, who highlighted the importance of maintaining these pivotal community buildings for the future.

According to Baroness Twycross, this funding will ensure that communities like Workington continue to benefit from the rich historical narrative tied to their local heritage sites.

The Places of Worship Renewal Fund gives priority to regions with high need, where funding challenges are most pronounced.

These efforts are facilitated by Historic England, which aims to support sites that form the heart of community identity and cultural heritage.
