Winter Droving festival moves to Carlisle after Penrith funding issues

Annual event to join Carlisle Carnivale

The Winter Droving festival, known for its vibrant masks, fire displays, and musical performances, will take place in Carlisle this year as part of Carlisle Carnivale on Saturday 24th October.

After fourteen successful editions in Penrith, the festival faced financial challenges following a weather cancellation last year, resulting in losses of approximately £20,000 for Eden Arts.

This financial strain led to difficulties in securing the necessary funding to responsibly host the event in Penrith again this year.

Despite efforts to gather funds, Eden Arts recognised the need to relocate to Carlisle, which offered a new opportunity to ensure the festival's continuation.

This move is not a permanent departure from Penrith, as the hope remains for the Winter Droving to return there in the future.

Participants and spectators in Carlisle can expect the event's signature masks, fire, music, drovers cup, and twilight procession, with an emphasis on joining in rather than merely watching.
