Windermere Gateway housing project faces setbacks due to grant funding timelines

Council faces delays on funding for major housing and infrastructure plans

Plans for the Windermere Gateway housing project have faced setbacks as Westmorland and Furness Council announced it cannot meet grant funding deadlines set by Homes England.

Council leader Cllr Jonathan Brook informed the council’s Cabinet on 20th January that the grant agreement for highways improvements, necessary to support the development, would not be pursued.

The project was set to use £9.95 million of Brownfield, Infrastructure and Land Funding, previously agreed with Homes England, for infrastructure work related to housing. The council says timelines for the grant funding cannot be met, which impacts the delivery of the initiative.

What is the Windermere Gateway project?

The Windermere Gateway project aims to address challenges in transport and housing within Windermere. The plans proposed solutions for traffic congestion, improved pedestrian and cycle routes, housing developments including affordable homes, and better integration of rail and bus services.

While discussions on the housing scheme continue, it is unclear when the infrastructure work and housing developments will progress.
