Whitehaven community invited to shape town's future development
Cumberland Council organises public event to discuss new vision for Whitehaven
Whitehaven residents and businesses are encouraged to participate in shaping the future of their town at an upcoming event organised by Cumberland Council.
On 24th March 2026, a public drop-in session will take place at Civic Hall, Whitehaven, from 2pm to 7pm.
This event is open to everyone and aims to share a new vision for the future development of Whitehaven.
Principles of the Masterplan
Cumberland Council plans to underpin the town's development with key principles.
These include celebrating Whitehaven’s heritage and waterfront identity, prioritising pedestrians and public transport over vehicles, activating the harbour and town centre with diverse activities, defining the town as a coastal destination and supporting economic and sustainable growth.
Deputy Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Emma Williamson, emphasised the importance of community involvement in this bold new vision.
Vision for Whitehaven
Since its establishment in 2023, Cumberland Council has invested over £2.45 million in Whitehaven, contributing through various funds and resources to improve local amenities.
The Whitehaven Masterplan aims to set a strategic direction for the town’s future.
This includes supporting economic growth, improving transport access, redevelopment of heritage assets like King Street, and establishing investment opportunities to benefit the town.
Cllr Williamson encouraged locals, business owners, and visitors to share their thoughts, saying: “Whether you are a local resident, worker, business owner, or visitor, we want to hear what you have to say about the future of the town."
