Whitehaven's nineties celebrated in Beacon Museum pop-up event
Final chance to immerse in local 90s nostalgia
The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven is set to host a special pop-up event celebrating life in Whitehaven during the nineties before the I Grew Up 90s exhibition concludes on 21st June.
Taking place on Saturday, 13th June and Sunday, 14th June, this event offers visitors a nostalgic journey through everyday life in Whitehaven and its surrounding areas during the decade.
The pop-up exhibition draws on photographs from the Whitehaven News archives, providing a unique view into familiar events, places, and moments that defined the community at the time.
Spotlighting local history
Councillor Anne Quilter, Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places at Cumberland Council, shared her enthusiasm for the exhibition:
“It’s brilliant to see something that reflects what life was like locally in the nineties."
Quilter highlighted how the photographs help residents remember and recognise elements of their own experiences.
Heather Holmes, Customer and Visitor Experience Manager, noted the timeliness of the event amidst a resurgence in 1990s culture across the UK.
Holmes remarked, “There is something really special about looking back at the everyday moments that shaped our communities."
Family history session
On Sunday, 14th June, visitors can participate in a free drop-in session with family history expert Bry Cooper.
Cooper will offer advice and tips to help attendees uncover their family stories.
Full event details, including ticket prices and booking information, are available on the museum’s website.
