New consultation opens on 20mph schemes for Westmorland and Furness

Residents urged to share opinions on road proposals

Residents of Westmorland and Furness are invited to participate in a new consultation launched today on the next phase of proposals for 20mph speed limits in their communities.

The 26 schemes under consultation were proposed by local parish and town councils aiming to improve road safety and create calmer environments.

Areas in consideration include locations within Eden, Furness, and South Lakeland.

Bringing these schemes forward has been supported by a £300,000 investment from the Council’s Priority Investment Fund, with 44 schemes already approved in earlier phases.

The council's Cabinet Member for Highways and ICT, Cllr Peter Thornton, expressed pride in the progress made towards implementing these schemes, which align with the council's priorities for safer roads, reduced noise, and a healthier environment conducive to walking and cycling.

Residents are encouraged to share their feedback via the online 20mph speed limit proposal consultation, while paper copies are available at various local libraries.

Several drop-in events have been organised for direct engagement with the Traffic Management Team.

These events will be held at various locations including Coronation Hall in Ulverston and Barrow Town Hall, spanning from late April to mid-May.

This consultation gives residents an opportunity to contribute feedback, influencing the design and implementation of the schemes, which will only proceed with strong community support.
