Grant funding available for community projects in West Cumbria ahead of women's cycling tour

Community organisations across West Cumbria are invited to take part in the excitement of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Women 2026, with Cumberland Council offering grant funding to support cycling-related activities and community engagement projects.

On 19th August 2026, the opening stage of the prestigious event will take place in Cumberland, with Cockermouth hosting both the start and finish. Riders will travel through several communities, including Frizington, Whitehaven, Lowca, and others, as they embark on this historic race.

The 2026 event marks the longest race in the history of the Tour of Britain Women, covering nearly 650 kilometres across five stages. This thrilling spectacle is expected to bring national recognition to Cumberland and the surrounding areas.

Grants ranging from £500 to £5,000 are available to community organisations across West Cumbria to develop activities that engage the local community and support the cycling event. Favourable consideration will be given to projects encouraging the inclusion of women and girls, promoting engagement through route decoration, and advocating increased participation in cycling.

Cllr Mark Fryer, Leader of Cumberland Council, emphasised the importance of local involvement:

"The Tour of Britain Women is an exciting opportunity for Cumberland and the communities along the route. We want local organisations to play a key role in creating activities that bring people together, encourage more people to get active and help communities feel part of this major sporting event. I would encourage eligible organisations to apply and help us create a lasting impact from the race."

Applications for grant funding are currently open and will be reviewed on a rolling basis, with decisions made within a week of submission.

The application deadline is 24th July 2026, but the fund may close earlier if all funds are allocated before this date.

Successful applicants must complete their projects by 30th October 2026 and will be required to submit a final report detailing project outcomes and expenditures.
