A village has been hit by a second earthquake in a month.

Locals in Silverdale, a picturesque village in Lancashire, near the border with Cumbria, reported windows rattling, rumbling and shaking overnight, from the latest quake.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) reported a 2.5 magnitude earthquake hit around 5.03am on Friday at a depth of 2.6km off the coast of Silverdale in Morecambe Bay.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage and the tremor was much reduced from the "Great Quake" of December 3, which measured 3.3 magnitude.

The BGS said the tremors were felt around the Morecambe Bay area with reports of "a quick sharp shaking jolt and made a thunder noise" and "The radiators and pictures rattled".

On the Volcano Discovery website, which tracks earthquakes across the globe and compiles comments, locals in the Silverdale area reported, "very weak shaking... rattling, vibrating".

A comment from a resident in Arnside, around three miles from Silverdale, reported: "Woke me up. Sounded like a short rumbling in the distance, like it happened a few streets away. Only lasted a couple of seconds. Nothing like the intensity of the previous one. I didn't feel the need to check for damage, but because of the last one, I definitely knew it was an earthquake."

Each year the BGS detects between 200 and 300 earthquakes in the UK, but only about 20 to 30 are strong enough to be felt.
