Plans filed to transform The Auction Mart in Ulverston into a community centre
Proposed Ulverston community centre could provide essential facilities for locals
A former industrial space in Ulverston could soon be transformed into a community centre if proposals submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council receive approval.
Plans have been lodged by the Old Mart Group CIC to change the use of The Auction Mart, on Well Lane in the south Cumbrian town. The proposal seeks to alter its current designation from ‘light industrial/workshop use’ to a mixed-use community facility called The Spot.
The planning application highlights the need for a community space in the area, stating Ulverston has lost nine key community hubs within the last 10 years.
It added: "Ulverston needs an accessible space for community groups to meet, for making activities that feed its numerous festivals and for support organisations to have a base from which to provide their essential services. It is the applicant’s intention to create that space at the application site."
A hub for connection and creativity
The Spot is envisaged as a hub where local residents can collaborate, work creatively, support one another, and access essential resources during challenging times.
The applicant, Old Mart Group CIC, is a community interest company formed by local volunteers. Its board comprises members involved in various initiatives such as the Ulverston Food Project, the Ulverston Resilience Group and the Ulverston Lantern Festival.
Funding and building improvements
The project benefited from the GKS legacy fund in August 2025, enabling improvements including a new insulated roof, updated heating systems, refurbished electrics, and general building renovations.
The application states that alongside community facilities and events, the proposed centre would also house organisations like Citizens Advice and the Ulverston Food Project.
The reuse of the building is expected to prevent it from falling into disrepair while delivering "significant public benefits," according to the application.
Next steps for the proposal
The consultation period regarding these plans is currently open and will run until 11th January 2026.
