Young people in Cumberland invited to join Tour de France volunteering programme

Young people aged 18 to 25 in Cumberland now have an opportunity to apply for a unique volunteering and employability programme linked to the Tour de France Grand Départ in 2027.

Applications for the Readiness to Work programme have been extended until 1st October 2026, offering young people in the region more time to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime chance.

Launched by Grand Départ GB and delivered by British Cycling, the programme allows participants to volunteer at one of the most iconic sporting events globally while gaining valuable skills to kickstart their career paths.

The Grand Départ will see Cumberland host significant stages, with Carlisle hosting the finish of Stage One on 2nd July 2027 and Keswick the start of Stage Two the next day.

The route will travel through the Lake District, providing local communities the unique opportunity to be part of this globally renowned event.

Through the programme, 300 young people volunteering as JOY Maker volunteers will receive personalised support, including CV and interview preparation, resilience training, financial awareness sessions, and personal development workshops.

Participants will also benefit from a three-month professional mentoring period in various sectors, such as event management, sport and performance, and marketing.

Open to eligible volunteers aged 18 to 25, whether in employment, education or seeking work, the programme runs from January to July 2027.

It aims to help build the skills, confidence, and knowledge required for future employment.

Volunteers will not only gain hands-on experience at an international event, but learn to recognise and demonstrate transferable skills developed through volunteering.

They will gain insights into various industries, receive employability support, and enhance the confidence needed for pursuing future career opportunities.

Cumberland Council is collaborating with partners to ensure local people benefit from the opportunities linked to the Tour de France, and encourages young people to get involved.
