186 tool thefts reported in Cumbria in 2025
Organised crime groups are believed to be behind widespread tool thefts across the country.
Tools were stolen from traders somewhere in the UK every 20 minutes last year, according to figures obtained from Freedom of Information requests.
In Cumbria, 2025 saw 186 reported tool thefts in the year.
Responses from 30 police forces revealed at least 26,164 recorded tool thefts in 2025, although the actual number is likely higher due to 15 forces not being able to respond.
Organised crime groups and opportunists are believed to be responsible for these thefts, according to Labour MP Amanda Martin, who is urging the Government to provide more support.
In response, the Home Office stated it is collaborating with police forces to address and prevent tool theft, while also strengthening neighbourhood policing by adding over 3,800 officers and investing £18.5 billion in police funding.
Direct Line for Business insurers reported that the average value of an insurance claim for tool theft in 2025 was £4,206.60.
