Storm Dave brings challenging driving conditions across Cumbria
Yellow wind warnings in place as millions set to travel during holiday period
Drivers are being advised to prepare for difficult conditions on UK roads due to storm Dave.
Yellow wind warnings are now in place across Sw Scotland and Cumbria, with heavy rain expected to continue today
Rebecca Guy, Senior Policy Manager at RoSPA, highlighted the potential hazards, saying: "With yellow wind warnings now in place across Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and parts of northern England this Easter weekend, and heavy rain expected to move in from Friday, anyone travelling should take extra care on the roads. "
Millions are anticipated to travel over the holiday period, leading to increased traffic, especially in regions affected by high winds and rain.
Forecasters predict winds reaching 50 to 60 mph, with even higher gusts in exposed areas, which combined with rain, will make driving conditions challenging.
Those traveling are urged to plan ahead, allowing extra time and preparing for potential delays.
RoSPA advises that in wet and windy conditions, drivers should slow down, increase the distance between vehicles, and maintain grip on the wheel.
The rain may reduce visibility and increase stopping distances, and strong crosswinds can impact vehicle handling, particularly high-sided vehicles.
Prior to setting off, motorists should check their vehicles, ensuring oil, coolant, and screenwash levels are appropriate, tyres are in good condition, and all lights and horns are functioning.
Regular vehicle assessments and caution can improve safety during inclement weather.
If conditions worsen, RoSPA recommends postponing or avoiding journeys altogether to prioritise safety.
