A Carlisle man has been jailed for nine years after deliberately driving a van into another man during an ongoing feud.

Ricky Murphy, 29, of Ferguson Place, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent after a week-long trial at Carlisle Crown Court in June.

He's been sentenced to nine years in prison today (23 September).

Murphy must serve two-thirds of the nine-year term in custody, and serve an extended three-year licence period.

He'll also been banned from driving for five years when he's released from prison.

The court heard how the victim was hit by the van on Prescott Road at around 3pm on January 4 2026

CCTV showed the vehicle mounting the pavement before hitting the man, leaving him with serious injuries and in a critical condition.

The van was later found burnt out in a Carlisle park.

Murphy was arrested at his home several hours after the attack.

Officers also found a Google search on Murphy’s phone asking: “how long jail sentence for running someone over”.

Detective Inspector Lee Brumpton said: “Murphy carried out this act deliberately using an extreme level of violence in broad daylight in a residential area, with witnesses."

He continued: “Murphy went to considerable lengths in an attempt to distance himself from what had happened, but the evidence gathered by the investigation team presented a clear picture of his actions that day and proved crucial in securing Murphy’s conviction.

“There is simply no excuse for the level of violence Murphy inflicted on the victim."
