Penrith Mountain Rescue Team has joined forces with Keswick MRT, to assist a 74 year-old man, who had fallen a significant distance down Central Gully on Great End.

It happened on Saturday (17th January).

The incident began at 2:55pm, when Keswick MRT requested additional support from Penrith MRT, to transport equipment up to the base of the crag, while Keswick team members rigged the top of the gully.

The team said: "Rescuers lowered themselves to the casualty's location in the gully, ultimately lowering him down to the awaiting teams below. Despite falling a considerable distance and being understandably shaken, the man was miraculously able to walk off the fellside with help from Penrith Mountain Rescue members, avoiding the need for a challenging stretcher carry.

"The rescue operation lasted eight hours in challenging conditions, but concluded successfully."

Penrith Mountain Rescue Team expressed their gratitude to Keswick MRT for their hospitality, which included some well-earned pizza and hot drinks at Keswick’s base, after the operation.
