The Port of Workington, owned and operated by Cumberland Council, has been recognised on the national stage after being shortlisted for two major honours at the upcoming British Ports Association (BPA) Awards.

The awards, considered one of the most prestigious events in the UK maritime and logistics calendar, celebrate excellence, innovation, sustainability, and leadership across the ports sector.

The Port of Workington has made the shortlist in the category of SME Port of the Year, which honours small and medium-sized ports that have demonstrated exceptional performance in areas such as operational efficiency, stakeholder engagement, and customer relations.

In addition, the port is in contention for the coveted Port Development Award, which recognises significant achievements in the planning, design, and execution of port infrastructure projects. The award particularly highlights developments that have enhanced port capacity, efficiency, and helped drive economic growth in their regions.

The dual shortlisting reflects years of strategic investment and forward-thinking planning. To date, over £25 million has been invested into the Port of Workington through a combination of Government and council funding. This funding has been used to upgrade infrastructure, improve road access, and expand warehouse capabilities, all of which position the port as a key economic driver in the region.

Barbara Cannon, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Financial Planning and Assets, welcomed the news and praised the dedicated efforts of the team behind the port's transformation.

“This is wonderful news and a real testament to the team at the port and those who support them for their hard work, energy, and ambition,” she said.

“The port is a key piece of infrastructure for Cumberland, and we have a strong vision to further expand it into a bustling hub for energy production, manufacturing, and logistics industries.”

The Port of Workington, strategically located on the west coast, has long served as an essential logistics hub for Cumbria and beyond. In recent years, its role has expanded in alignment with Cumberland Council’s ambition to unlock sustainable economic growth and support clean energy initiatives.

The winners of the BPA Awards will be announced at the BPA Conference Gala Dinner, set to take place tomorrow (1st October). The event will bring together key stakeholders and industry leaders from across the UK’s maritime and logistics sectors.
