Two police officers from Cumbria have been nationally recognised for their bravery following a violent knife attack in Carlisle.

The officers, PCs Heather Watson and Matthew Johnston, received the North West regional award at the National Police Bravery Awards in London on 9th July.

Their honour comes after an incident at a Carlisle address in May 2025, when they were confronted by a woman armed with a hunting knife.

PC Watson suffered a serious facial injury during the incident but persevered alongside PC Johnston to regain control and ensure the safety of others.

Their actions have been applauded by their peers, with Chief Constable Darren Martland praising their courage, professionalism, and resilience.

“Everyone across Cumbria Constabulary is immensely proud of their actions and this national recognition,” Martland said.

David Allen, Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, also voiced admiration for the officers’ actions amidst difficult circumstances.

“They represent the very best of policing and this national recognition is thoroughly deserved,” Allen said.

The awards celebrate the extraordinary acts of bravery shown by police officers across the country, highlighting their dedication to public safety.
