People in Barrow are being urged to take extra care in securing their homes as the evenings get darker.

Cumbria Police say opportunistic thieves often look for easy chances - like unlocked doors, open windows, or valuables left in plain view.

Empty homes are also more likely to be targeted.

Detective Inspector Mike Kirkham from Barrow CID said the darker nights give criminals more opportunities to strike.

He added that simple steps like locking doors and windows, even when you are at home, can help reduce the risk.

Advice from officers includes removing keys from locks and keeping them out of sight, leaving a light on if you are out, and considering CCTV.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to call police.

Reports will be investigated as part of Operation Themis, which focuses on tackling burglaries across Cumbria.
