Pendle Council launches campaign to combat fly-tipping this October
Residents urged to be vigilant against rogue waste traders
Pendle Borough Council has teamed up with Keep Britain Tidy to launch 'Fight Fly-Tipping Fortnight,' running from 12th to 25th October.
The campaign warns residents about criminal waste traders who use professional-looking ads to pose as legitimate businesses, only to illegally dump the waste they collect.
These rogue traders often hide behind 'five-star' reviews and attractive prices, making it challenging to distinguish them from genuine operators.
Councillor Asjad Mahmood, Leader of Pendle Borough Council, emphasizes the importance of residents making simple checks before handing over their rubbish.
“We’re asking residents to make three simple checks: ask for a waste carrier licence, verify it on the Environment Agency register, and obtain a receipt.”
This precautionary measure aims to protect residents and prevent illegal dumping from damaging the community and environment.
Pendle has seen instances of mattresses, furniture, and other waste being dumped on back streets and local beauty spots, impacting both the landscape and council resources.
Operational Services teams work tirelessly to address fly-tipping, but Councillor Zafar Ali, the Council’s Operational Portfolio Holder, insists residents need to help stop it at its source.
Ali highlighted, “No one wants to think the person they’ve paid to take away their rubbish might dump it elsewhere in the community. But rogue traders are doing just that.”
Residents are encouraged to report any instances of fly-tipping via Pendle Council’s website.
